Bigger is not always better when it comes to breasts. The ladies that I see in my practice for breast reduction are extremely disadvantaged by the weight of their breasts. They have a difficult time finding clothes that fit, participating in physical activities, and do not appreciate the unwanted attention larger breasts can sometime attract. Studies show that breast reduction or reduction mammaplasty is the plastic surgery procedure with the highest satisfaction rate and offers the greatest improvement to quality of life. Having large breasts leads to a sedentary lifestyle often associated with weight gain. Many of my patients report weight loss after their breast surgery simply because even the simplest day-to-day activities are easier.

My goals with breast reduction are to reduce the weight of the breast and simultaneously provide a lift in order to harmonize a woman’s physique. My patients who have had breast reductions are amongst the most grateful.

The process involves the removal of excess skin, breast tissue and fat along with re positioning the nipple at a higher level, and reduction in areola size. My preferred technique is a vertical breast reduction resulting in a lollipop shaped scar. There are some women that will need a “boat anchor” shaped incision if we need to remove more volume or skin.

Combine with liposuction to improve breast shape. Some women will request a breast reduction along with a tummy tuck as part of a comprehensive Mommy Makeover.

This 24 year old woman is shown 7 months after undergoing a bilateral breast reduction using a short scar vertical technique. We removed 600 g from the right breast and 640 g from the left. Liposuction was used to provide a more sculpted result.

This 50 year old patient is shown 7 months after undergoing a bilateral breast reduction using a short vertical scar technique. 443g was taken off the right breast and 382g taken off the left breast. Her scars are still immature, and will fade with time.

Her scars take the form of a “lollypop”, around the areola and a vertical line extending from 6 o’clock down to the breast crease.

Quick facts

How long is the the surgery?
2 ½ -3hours

General or local anesthesia?
General anesthesia.

Recovery time?
Plan 10 to 14 days before returning to work.

Painful?
There is much less pain than a patient expects. Discomfort is easily controlled with Tylenol.

When can I go home?
Same day as surgery.

Can I wear a bra after the surgery?
All of our patients are put in a surgical bra at the end of the surgery which they continue to wear for 4 weeks.

When can I shower?
We put a water proof bandage at the end of the surgery allowing our patients to shower immediately.
